Two Chimney Fires in a Night Tour
On Thursday, March 10, 2011 “B” Platoon responded to a reported chimney fire on outer Turner Road. The run card requested Engine-5, Engine-3, Tower-1 and 315. The companies were able to make quick work of the confirmed chimney fire. They were able to contain the fire to the chimney and had no extension of the fire. There was no damage to the home and the occupants were able to sleep there that night once crews cleared the scene.
As units were clearing this scene another reported chimney fire was dispatched on outer Riverside Drive. The run card requested Engine-2, Engine-3, Tower-1, and 315. Engine-3 which had a four man company and was currently returning to quarters from the previous chimney fire was able to quickly respond to the alarm. Engine-3 reported that this was no longer a chimney fire, that it was a confirmed structure fire with fire showing through the roof. With a four man engine company and other companies responding, the crew inside made quick work of the fire. They were able to deploy an attack line and had water on the origin of the fire within minutes of arriving. As other crews arrived they proceed to do extensive overhaul as the fire was in the walls and attic area. Other members of the AFD proceeded in protecting the occupant’s property. Salvage covers were used to protect their property and most of their property was saved. Water and smoke damage was limited to the house because of the quick fire knock down that was done. This fire could have been much worse as it was noted the house that was being rented by three adults had no working smoke detectors. The home owner was awoken by the crackling of the fire above his room.
Just more examples on why Auburn has a staffed, trained department that responds promptly and professionally. If some factors would have changed in either of these calls the outcome of both of these fires could have changed dramatically. Thanks to the dedication of the Auburn Fire Department life and property were saved.
